What’s a Perinatal Behavioral Health Coach?

The FamilyWell Perinatal Behavioral Health Certification (PBHC) Program was created to address the current maternal mental health crisis and mental health providers shortage in the United States.

Certified Perinatal Behavioral Health Coaches work directly with parents to provide emotional support, validation, and education on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, concrete coping tools, and wellness strategies.

By increasing the number of Perinatal Behavioral Health Coaches in the workforce, more families can access the mental health support they desperately need during pregnancy and the first year postpartum.

Why this matters

Perinatal mental health support doesn’t only happen in clinics.

It happens in conversations, in community spaces, in moments of trust.

The individuals leading this work are often the closest to the people who need it most.

Through the FamilyWell PBHC Community Impact Scholarship, we’re investing in those individuals, because expanding access starts with strengthening the people already showing up.

FAQs

  • A Perinatal Behavioral Health Coach (PBHC) is a trained professional who supports individuals during pregnancy and the postpartum period with evidence-informed, non-clinical mental health care.

PBHCs are equipped with practical tools—such as foundational cognitive behavioral techniques, emotional support strategies, and care coordination skills—to help individuals navigate common perinatal mental health challenges. They often work alongside clinical providers or within community settings to expand access to support.
